ASTM A423 Grade 1
ASTM A423 Grade 1 Tube is a grade of carbon steel known as the weathering steel. The specialty of the material is that it forms an oxide layer when exposed to severe weather conditions. The oxide layer formed on the surface is called the patina. Once the patina is formed, it resists contact with the atmosphere and therefore the core of the material remains non-corroded for longer periods of time. This is also called the Corten Steel GR.1 ERW Pipe and it is used under open weather applications. Most outdoor systems that are exposed to weather use this kind of pipes.
The A423 Gr 3 Seamless Tube can be used in complex piping due to the ease of fixture and the high corrosion resistance properties. The ASTM A423 Alloy Steel Tube is used in many applications such as the condensers, oil and gas industries, petrochemicals and others. The electric resistance welded nature provides strength to the pipe at the same time makes it easy for welding. The ASTM A423 Grade 1 ERW Tubes are used in the power generation and specialty chemical industries. The ASTM A423 Gr.1 Weathering Steel is preferred in the open weather applications because of its patina formation. One of the known applications is the ASTM A423 Corten Steel Grade 3 air heater tube where the temperature and pressure are high. The performance of the ASTM A423 Gr 3 Seamless Steel Tube in a long term is unmatched by the others because once the Corten steel forms the oxide layer, the corrosion drops altogether. The ASME SA423 Corten Steel Grade 1 EFW Tube is also used in Pharmaceutical equipment, sea water equipment, chemical equipment and chemical plant components, heat exchangers and pulp and paper industry. It is a cost effective solution for highly corrosive atmospheres.
